Hiking Information

Kusasenri-ga-hama view from Mt. Kishimadake

The trekking courses starting from the Visitor Center offer views of the outer rim of the Aso caldera, formed 90,000 years ago, as well as the Kusasenri-ga-hama crater remnants from 30,000 years ago. You can also see Kishimadake, formed 4,000 years ago, and the active crater of Nakadake.

Aso volcano museum offers various guided tours.
You can choose a course based on your interests and physical ability.
Guides will introduce you to volcanic terrains, geological formations, grasslands and wildflowers.

Rules

    Check the latest information, do not trespass closed hiking routes due to volcanic gas, earthquake or heavy rain disasters.
    Especially volcanic gas are flowing around Mt. Nakadake crater.
    Person with asthma should avoid walking Sunasenri-ga-hama and Mt.Nakadake to take precautions for your health as hazardous gas can trigger potential attacks.

    Submit a hiking registration form to the trailhead box.

    Stay on walking path to avoid danger and protect ecosystems.

    Ensure to bring adequate gear and plan your hike according to your physical fitness.

    Take care not to let your phone battery run out during the hike.

  • Refrain from picking flowers and plants

  • Avoid approaching and feeding wild animals

  • Refrain from capturing animals or insects

  • Please smoke only in designated areas

  • Campfires allowed only in designated areas

  • Avoid entering grazing areas as it may cause diseases to livestock
