阿蘇といえば、放牧された牛や馬がのんびりと草原で過ごしている風景を思い浮かべる方も多いのではないでしょうか。

When people think of Aso, many imagine a peaceful scene of cows and horses grazing freely on vast grasslands.

実はこの豊かな草原の草花を栄養源としている動物は他にもいます。

But they’re not the only animals that benefit from this rich environment.

九州で唯一アフリカゾウが暮らしている熊本市動植物園では、マリーちゃんとエリちゃんという2頭のゾウが、阿蘇の草原で収穫された新鮮な野草を食べているのです。

At the Kumamoto City Zoo and Botanical Gardens-the only place in Kyushu where African elephants live-two elephants named Mary and Ellie enjoy fresh wild grass harvested from Aso’s grasslands.

阿蘇を訪れたら、広がる草原のその先で、その恵みを味わうゾウさんたちの姿に思いを巡らせてみてください。
